My name is Makeba Jones, and I’m the Program Director for a new equity-based school leadership program in San Diego called
RISE UPP - RISE Urban Principal Preparation Program. RISE UPP takes an active, experiential approach to supporting future principals as transformative leaders of urban schools. You can read more about RISE UPP below. Your school came up as we were brainstorming
innovative schools trying to meet the needs of diverse populations of students.
We are looking for schools that might be willing to host a one-day visit next year. The goal of the school site visit
is to expose RISE UPP participants to school leaders who are trying interesting things on behalf of young people and to visit schools to learn more about the various ways school leaders are experimenting with meeting the needs of students. The purpose is not
to visit a “perfect” school, but to visit a school that is actively taking risks and to hear from school leaders about the joys, challenges, frustrations, and successes that come from taking risks on behalf of young people.
I’m happy to speak by phone or email to tell you more about RISE UPP. We have grant funding to support school site visits for our participants. We have 11 participants total, but they will have choices among a few different schools to visit. It’s possible
not all 11 will choose to visit your school. I will know their preferences by early September. We want to make the one-day visit as smooth as possible for you so that the experience is not disruptive or burdensome to you and to your school. Would you be willing
to consider hosting a visit for our participants next year between December and April? We can certainly find a day that is best for your site.
I hope you’ll consider supporting the RISE UPP participants on their journey to becoming transformative school leaders.
RISE UPP PROGRAM BACKGROUND
The RISE UPP Program is a partnership between a grassroots organization, RISE San Diego (http://risesandiego.org/), and
a university-based research center, the Jacobs Institute for Innovation in Education at the University of San Diego (https://www.sandiego.edu/jacobs-institute/).
The vision for the partnership is to create a pipeline for principals who are committed to advancing equity in San Diego’s urban schools. RISE UPP provides participants with a concentrated focus on cultivating an equity mindset and a multifaceted set of technical
and cultural leadership skills. You can read more about RISE UPP by clicking this link http://risesandiego.org/rise-upp/.
